I think my GPS had a minor glitch towards the end. The last part of the hike did not seem that steep
The start of the Wind Cave was my start and end point for the hike.
Once the trail turns north, you start a steady climb.
The colors of the "stripes" you see from a distance seem more pronounced as you get closer to some of them.
At one point the trail is only rock, and a bit hard to follow, but nothing else near it seems like a reasonable alternative.
Once done with most of the climb, you hit the long saddle and plenty of nice views.
