The District 23 motocross season opened up in the deep sand of Grantsburg Motocross Park. Sheldon Fratzke and Bill Medek proved to be ready for the season to start, both taking wins in competitive A classes. Weather more often associated with May or June greeted the over 200 riders that showed up to take on the whoop-filled playground.

The promoting Straight Arrow Enduro Riders were still mourning the loss of long-time club member, Ross Thompson, who passed away unexpectedly last July at the age of 39. The club had stickers made with his familiar 66 on it, and made them available to his family members that were attending the event, and to anyone else that wanted something to remember him by. District 23 had earlier declared the champion of the 125cc class to be given an award in his honor. Ross was running strong in the class’ inaugural season at the time of his passing.

The unusually warm spring this year allowed the club to hold their late-March Sand Blast event in decent weather two weeks earlier, but also left the track dry enough to necessitate quite a bit or watering during the days leading to the event. Their efforts, and the 60-degree day, resulted in ideal track and weather conditions for the race.

The first premier class on the docket was Open A. In moto one, Cody Thomsen and Dan Holmes were running one-two early on, until Holmes went down on lap two. By the fourth of seven laps, Josh Patzoldt had worked his way into the lead, followed by Medek. Though Medek got close a few times, the order remained unchanged to the finish. They were followed by Cody Breitbach, Holmes, and Korey Beach.

Tackling a much rougher track in the second moto, Holmes took the early lead and never looked back, taking the win. Medek was again second, his hard-charging pair of seconds giving him the overall. He was followed by Patzoldt (1-3), Holmes (4-1), Breitbach (3-4), and Beach (5-5).

Medek again fought with Patzoldt in the 30+A class, as the two traded moto wins. Medek’s 1-2 topped Patzoldt’s 4-1 score.

Josh Patzoldt broke out the air-cooled 89 YZ490 and set an amazing pace early on.

Fratzke does not yet qualify for the 30+ class, so his age class would be 25+A. He lead all laps of both motos, except in moto one when another Grantsburg regular, Rick Amatuzio, rode out front for the first lap. The top five finishers all finished both motos in the same position. After Fratzke, it was Kyle Love, Michael Mikrot, new A rider, Chas Kadlec, and quite a bit past 25, Norman Miesen.

Since Medek elected to ride only three classes on this day, skipping 25+A, he only faced off against Fratzke in 250A Both riders elected to take advantage of the rule change that was made last year and rode two-strokes; Medek on a Yamaha and Fratzke on a Suzuki. They did not get much of chance to battle, as Fratzke had the better starts and ran out front both motos. Medek had to fight from quite a ways back to get to second in the first moto, but stayed close to Fratzke with a better start in moto two. The rest of the top five also finished both motos the same. The overall was Fratzke, Medek, Breitbach, Nathan Rosso, and Mikrot.

Other double class winners included Noah McPherson, who topped 85cc 9-11 and 85cc 9-12 (it’s a long story why there are 2 similar classes), defending Ross Thompson memorial winner, Shane Rhode, who won 125cc and Schoolboy, Tanner Anderson showing good form in sweeping 250C and 14-24C, and club member and part-time Brazilian, Craig Cherrington, who rode to victory in 40+B and 45+.

This was the only race scheduled for the track in 2010. The club now turns their efforts towards the July 11th Stone Lake Hare Scrambles and the August 21st and 22nd Duquette Enduro. Thete are a ways off, but there is always plenty of work to be done to the trails.
