As the heat of summer settled in, racing in the District 23 Premier classes moved to the Berm Benders Raceway. With some extra money on the line, a few track changes, most of the fastest riders in the state attending, Kawasaki and Suzuki contingency awards, and ten-lap motos, racing in those classes was intense and unpredictable. There was also the usual compliment of District classes with nearly 500 riders keeping the gates full all day.

The first premier race was in 125 A. John Dehn got the holeshot with James Larson, Spencer Kadlec, and Bruce Dehn battling early. As the laps wore on, John Dehn pulled a gap with Kadlec set in second. Bruce eventually passed Larson for third. Runaway Premier points leader, Scott Jendro, had a bad start and could only work up to fifth.

In the second moto, John Dehn again got the holeshot and pulled an early gap. Larson held second early, but was passed by Bruce Dehn, then Jendro, who was again working his way through the pack after a poor start. Overall, it was the Caswell Kawasakis of John Dehn (1-1) and Bruce Dehn (3-2) getting the top 2 spots, and with it, plenty of Kawasaki contingency bucks. Following overall were Kadlec (2-5), Jendro (5-3) and Larson (4-4).

Later in the day, with the track a bit rougher, the 250 A class took to the track. The players were mostly the same, with the addition of Jason Doyle, who had been pounding down the laps in Texas as a VP Fuel tester, and was making his first D23 appearance of the year.

In the first race, Chad Koenig lead into the first turn, but started to slide out. If he was riding by himself, he would probably save it every time, but unfortunately there was a pack of charging riders behind him. The resulting chain reaction took down quite a few of the contenders as well as leaving Koenig with what appeared to be a broken collarbone. Getting away clean, Bruce Dehn built a quick lead over Amzoil Vet rider, Rick Amatuzio and Kyle Jones. On the third lap, Jendro, who was caught up in the first turn pile, highsided spectacularly out of the moto. John Dehn had already retired from the race and would not start the second. Bruce lead all the way, with Doyle and Kadlec moving through to second and third. Jones and Amatuzio followed.

In the second race, Jendro got out front early and just kept pulling away, taking out his frustrations of the day by charging hard for the entire race. Dehn and Doyle were next, working up from bad starts, seeming to get faster as the race wore on. With many riders running into problems in one of the motos, the overall ended up being Dehn (1-2), Doyle (2-3), Kadlec (3-6), Justin Tate (7-7) , and Dana Yacuk (6-8).

Getting away from the Premier classes, not all the racers are young males. One of my favorite combinations is the often double-dropped 50+ and Women’s classes. In the 50+ class, Doug Stacklie looked to keep his long win streak in the class going, a streak so long that it surpassed the research capabilities of the author, but is estimated to be at least four years. The always-smooth Stacklie made it look easy, pulling the holeshot and pulling a big gap early. Behind him both times was Craig Cherrington, whose presence would still provoke waves of dread at any quad race, but is concentrating on making the transition back to bikes. He looked close to matching Stacklie’s speed as the race wore on, but couldn’t close the early gap.

Unlike most of the other classes, both motos had an identical finish order. Following overall were Robert Anderson, Danny Buckwalter, and Bruce Schaapveld.

In the first moto of the Women’s class, Jessica Hansen withstood some early pressure to take a comfortable win. Allison Larson worked into second, followed by Emma Rizner, Jenee Boie, and Jenna Fore. In the second moto, Hansen, Larson, and Fore were close early, before Hansen pulled a gap in the lead with Larson comfortably in second. Boie moved up to third followed by Fore and Kala Swenson. With the sweep, Hansen took her Wheeler MX / Dammer Designs / Thanks Mom and Dad / Honda to the overall win followed by Larson (2-2), Boie (4-3), Fore (5-4) and Rizner (3-8).

The track is located about 80 miles north of the Twin Cities, near the city of Mora. The surface is fairly unique, as it isn’t quite sand or hard pack. Dig it up and it gets thick and rough, like sand. Pack it down and it gets quite hard packed. Kurt and Kelly Caswell purchased the track in 2004 and have been making improvements to the track and the facility ever since. The turnout, which was one of the largest in a down year, showed that people appreciate the considerable efforts of the Caswells and the Berm Benders crew.

No one was able to win three classes, but several were able to win two. Jesse Wentland took the overalls in 85cc 9-12 and 85cc 12-15, Dalton Carlson topped Super-Mini and 125 Jr., Cody Thomsen won the crowded 125 B and 250 B classes, Levi McMains continued his climb back from serious injuries by sweeping 25+ B and 30+ B, and Mike Nathe handled 40+ A and 45+ A. The races are supported by Caswell Cycle, J & D Trailers, Swenson Heating, Stewart Plumbing, Grand Casino, Northway Sports, Rivard Contracting-Central Wood Products, Precision Line and Morrell Companies.
