In the 85c 12-15 and Super-Mini classes, Carlson, was in another league, jetting out to big leads in all four motos. The promoting Straight Arrow Enduro Riders tried timed motos for this race, which resulted in 6-8 lap races. The track conditions lead to relatively short laps times, at least for the fastest riders, so everyone got their share of sand-pounding fun. Carlson seemed to get faster as the races wore on, relieving several riders of the need to ride one of their laps.

Stepping up to a big bike, the 125 Junior (12-15) race provided a bit more of a challenge for him. In the first moto, Tyler Allen and Carlson were virtually attached to each other the entire race, swapping the lead on several occasions. After 7 laps, it came down to the last turn, where a lapped rider joined them, and Allen was able to squeak by for the win by the narrowest of margins. In the second race, Carlson was able to pull a gap early and ran unchallenged to the win and the overall.

In the premier classes, there was a lot of green earning green. In the 125 A class, "you don’t mess with family", as Bruce, John, and Kyle Dehn went 1-2-3. John was able to get the better of Bruce in the 250 A class, with 16-24 A winner, Dan Holmes, bucking the trend with a Suzuki, riding a strong second moto to third overall.

The 25+ A class featured a fantastic dice both motos between Sheldon Fratzke, Bill Medek, and Josh Patzholdt. Fratzke was able to win the first race over Medek and Patzholdt and had slowly pulled a small gap in the second race when he went down in the whoops on the last lap. Patzholdt was there to take the point, but had Medek all over him. He was able to barely hold onto the lead giving him the overall over Medek and a fast-recovering Fratzke.

In the older guy classes, Bill Engstrom swept 40+ A and 45+ A, riding a two-stroke YZ to comfortable wins in each race. The only other rider to win two classes was the wide-open, Alex Peper, sweeping at Grantsburg once again, this time in the 125 B and 16-24 B classes. The Arrows were not quite as successful as the last race here, but still did quite well. Charlie Forrest won 30+ A, Tim Kight topped 45+, and Lana Merkley took the Women’s class, all of them doing it with a two-moto sweep.

Already reeling from the loss of club member, Paul Spears, earlier in the year, the Arrows were delivered another blow with the sudden and unexpected death of Sheila Brunsberg. Sheila, along with her husband, Mark, were always helping out at the Grantsburg events, as well as at the Holyoke Enduro. Taking up the sport later in life, she rode a CR125 through the woods and in the sand, despite being a bit seat-height challenged and risking being unable to re-start the bike. Her friendly manner and kind spirit will be missed dearly by all of us that were lucky enough to know her.

This was the last event of 2007, but already plans were in the works for improvements to the facility. It’s never too early to start training for those early-spring sand races.
