Bill Medek signed up for four classes, looking for the elusive four-class sweep. That quest, and strong performances by the several of the hosting club members, highlighted a pleasant day of racing at Grantsburg Motocross Park.

On the practice day prior to race, the promoting, Straight Arrow Enduro Riders, conducted voluntary sound testing. Bill Medek took advantage of the opportunity and found out that his after-market exhaust was considerably over the 99-db limit. He went back to his stock exhaust and passed the re-test. To anyone that thought that louder is faster, they’d need to finish in front of Medek to prove it. He was also operating with only eight fully functional fingers, from a few incidents earlier in the season, but neither potential handicap seemed to slow him down on Saturday.

In his first class, 125 A, he was able to hold off young Shane Tismer both races for the sweep. In his next race, 30+ A, he was again able to sweep, despite a spirited battle with Straight Arrow, Charlie Forrest. Following them overall were Rory Horner and fellow Arrows, Tom Peterson and Ross Thompson.

Charlie Forrest Jr. is urged on by Charlie Sr. and other club members, as he tries to reel in +30 A winner, Bill Medek.

With 250 A being a gimme, Medek being the only rider to finish both motos, it came down to the 25+ A class to complete the historic sweep, but several Grantsburg regulars were waiting for him. Unfortunately, a few spills cost him the chance to do the quad. Sheldon Fratzke swept both motos, followed overall by Josh “Too Tall” Patzholdt, Forrest, and Medek.

With drought conditions continuing, and with it a fire warning, the track was soaking in the considerable amount of moisture the track workers were putting down. Watering through out the day helped keep the dust to a minimum. With high winds a few weeks earlier, the Parking Lot section started out as smooth as had been seen for quite some time. A slightly lower than normal turn-out also had many of the veterans referring to the track as “smooth”. Everything is relative.

No one else was able to win three classes, but a few Youth riders won two. With Brandon Rheim winning 85cc 9-12 and Zack Osowski winning Super Mini, they would meet in the 85cc 12-15 class. Rheim was able to win both motos, winning two classes at this track again. Riley Kroone was also able to double up, riding his Northway Sports Kawasaki/Polaris/Victory, Thor, Bell Helmets-backed Kawasaki to wins in 125 C and Schoolboy. Devin Donaho won the 85cc 7-11 class for the second time in a row at the track, but a hard crash in the 85cc 9-12 cost him any chance at the double.

It will be left up to the reader as to what this means, but it seemed the older the class, the more the home track advantage for the Arrows. Rob “Bobcat” Murphy swept both motos of 30+ B, followed by Jeremy Tholen and another Arrow, Bob Housh. He backed that up with a second in the 25+ B behind Jamie Koch. Tholen filled out that podium.

In the 40+ races, last year’s MX Chair, Peterson, ran unchallenged in the 40+ A class, while Housh lead an Arrow podium sweep of 40+ B, Mark Brunsburg, and the usually unmentioned, Bob Chase, following him to the checkered. Current MX Chair, Mike Murphy, won his “first race ever”, finding time to take the overall in 40+ C by topping Darin Rothe and Camille Cagle.

Long-time Arrow, Tim Kight won both 45+ and 50+, battling with Hayward, Wisconsin’s, Patrick Duffy, in all four motos. The only break in the old-guy, Arrow sweep was the 45+ A class, where Ray Osowski fought off Mike Mineheine for the win. The youngest club member of the aforementioned bunch, Erin Laschinger, (really, I’m not just saying that out of fear) kept her undefeated streak at the track intact, taking her third overall in the Womens class of the year.

This was the last of the spring races at the track for 2007. The fall race is scheduled for Mexican Independence Day, September 16. It will also include Saturday practice and be a District 23 points-paying event.
