The District 23 Motocross season opened at Grantsburg Motocross Park amid dark skies. The monsoon-like weather prior to the race may have kept some racers away, but the three hundred entrants who showed up found the sandy track a bit soggy in spots early, but very tacky as the day wore on. Dustin Harguth took home the most hardware, topping three of the biggest classes of the day; 125cc B, 250cc B, and 16-24 B. There was plenty of action in those classes as well as many of the others.

The first race of the year always has an extra excitement to it. Racers in new classes or riding different bikes. All the point tallies are reset to zero. Throw in a few changes to the track since last fall, and you could feel the anticipation coming in. There was quite a bit of rain leading up to the race, which was mostly soaked up by the sandy surface, but the extra moisture seemed to make the track form even rougher than usual.

Harguth used consistent riding to get two of his overalls. Alex Peper and Bobby Droher each won motos in the 31-rider 125 B class, but problems in their other motos knocked them down in the overall results. Harguth rode to 3-2 finishes for the overall, followed by Jared Blaser (2-4) and Andrew Rutledge (5-3). He used similar consistency in the nearly as crowded, 16-24 B class. Again, Blaser and Droher finished with moto wins paired with bad finishes, leaving Harguth, and his solid 2-2, as the overall winner. He was followed by Mac Rivard (5-3) and Justin Collins (4-4). It was in the 250 B class that Harguth was able to have an easier time of it, working his way to the front early in both races and sweeping both motos comfortably. Following him in the overall results was Jon Songetay (2-2) and Mike Mikrot (3-3).

There were still a few parts of the track quite soupy. 40+ B rider, Steve Tate finds one of them.

The more mature riders always seem to be attracted to this old-school track and many of their races had good battles in them as well. Former multi-time state champ, “Super” Jack Parenteau, nearly swept all four motos in 45+ A and 40+ A. Only a fall and time-consuming remount in the first 40+ A class ruined the sweep. Jack holeshot every moto on the big CR500, showing there is still some life in two-strokes after all. Gary Goeden was the one to benefit from Parenteau’s first moto problems taking the overall in 40+ A with a 1-3 score. He was followed overall by Parenteau (4-1) and John Norick (3-2). Behind Parenteau’s sweep of the 45+ A class was Jerry “hasn’t been to Grantsburg in 20 years” Schultze (2-2) and Norick (3-3).

The promoting Straight Arrow Enduro Riders rerouted the track in a few areas, allowing the riders that were there early for the rainy organized practice on Saturday some nearly virgin sand to burn in. The lap times of the fastest riders decreased a bit, but most thought the changes improved the overall flow of the track. By the end of the day Sunday, the new sections weren’t quite as rough as some of the more established sections, but still were quite similar; a whoop-filled, big-bermed, test of endurance.

The section that was replaced was just a bit dug in as these before and after shots show.

The 250 C class often finds some unpredictable action and this race was no exception. In the first moto, Shane Marsyla took the lead early and never relinquished it. Chad. Noaeill held second for most of the race. Dennis Lau worked his way up from as bad start to finish third. In the second race, Marsyla was once again out front, but fell, allowing both Lau and Noaeill by. With the overall in the balance, he worked his way past Noaeill on the last lap for the second place and first overall. Lau (3-1) was second with Noaeill’s 2-3 only good enough for third overall.

It was with heavy heart that many of the Arrows were working the race. Long-time club member and Grantsburg track fixture, Paul Spears, passed away in February from suicide. He was 40 years old. His death was a shock to everyone who knew him. He had a way of making people feel comfortable and always wanted to make sure that the people around him were enjoying the moment. The idea that someone like him could take his own life, with so many people around him who would have done anything to help him, really underscores the importance of dealing with Depression properly. He left behind a void that will be hard to fill. Paul was a great guy and is dearly missed.

A few riders managed to win two classes. Eric Anderson topped 65cc 10-11 and 85cc 9-12, Tyler Allen won 85cc 12-15 and Supermini, Dan Holmes took 250cc A and 16-24 A, and Leon Larock was way out front in all the motos of 30+ B and 40+ B. The next race weekend is April 21-22, a District 23 Premeir race.
