Riders from five states headed indoors to ride the first event on the 2006 Motokazie schedule, the I-90 Arena Motocross. Nick Claire was the only rider able to win four classes over the course of the two nights, sweeping the competitive 125cc B and 16-24 B classes. Nick Jackson was the top placing A rider, winning the 250 class both nights and Friday’s 16-24 A race.

Although the winter in this area has been mild in relative terms, riding outside on unfrozen dirt was still not even close to being an option. Enter the I-90 Arena. Located very close to the Iowa border and less than 100 miles from South Dakota, the facility usually hosts competitions involving horses and other farm animals, but the venue proved to be a very capable facility for indoor motocross. The track, pit area, concessions, and restrooms were in one heated area. Lap times on the areanacross-style track ranged from 35-45 seconds.

The first night of racing saw the grandstands filled to their 500-person capacity. Nearly 150 entries lead to plenty of action for the spectators all night. Early in the order was Claire’s first race, the 125cc B class. Consistency proved to be the key as a pair of seconds gave him the overall win. Moto winners Shane Gailey and Landon Rasch both had problems in their other races. He had an easier time of it in 16-24 B, sweeping both motos and taking the overall over Trevor Bakken. Jackson won every moto he entered, sweeping the tough 250cc A and 16-24 A classes. The only other racer to win two classes was Wisconsin’s Tayva Strom in the 50cc Chain and 50cc Open classes.

The track was running from Thursday to Monday. Mixed in with the practice sessions were the races Saturday and Sunday, pit bike races Friday night, and a Race School on Monday, which featured one of Iowa’s own areanacross stars, Cody Gilmore.

The second night of races saw quite a few new faces, but a slight drop in the total entries. Claire won all four motos this time, giving him a perfect overall record for the two nights. In 250cc A, Jackson traded wins with Josh Sorenson, but got the overall with the second moto win. South Dakota’s Jesse Frost took wins in Schoolboy and 125cc C, which. Combined with his Saturday win in the 125cc C class, made him the only other rider to win three classes over the two nights. Henry Miller also won two classes on the evening, taking the 50cc Chain and 65cc 7-9 classes.

Several riders were able to win one class on each night. Adam Bistodeau won the Mini quads each time out, Kristen Oja swept the Women’s class, and Cody Lakore was undefeated in Supermini. Casey Schriock, all the way from Minot, North Dakota, followed up his Schoolboy win Saturday, with a win in 125cc A on Sunday. Joe Neumann picked up wins in 85cc 7-11 and 85cc 9-12. Jay Sallstrom, a frequent Hill climb competitor, took the 16-24 C wins each night. Trying to keep pace was King of thr Hill contender, Steve Cain, who took the 250cc C win on Sunday.

The events were helped made possible by DougSports Center, Jackson Cycle, Delano Sports Center, Coca Cola, DLC Cycle, Edge Motorsports, SRP, GPS Racing, Silver Dollar Bar, Holiday Inn, Super 8 Motel, AmericInn, and Best Western. The next event on the Motokazie Indoor Motocross schedule is Fergus Falls, Minnesota on February 16-20.
