Round Nine of the AHRMA Midwest Regional series was scheduled for September 16 at Midway Recreation Park near Kellogg, Minnesota. This was also the only race with a full set of Vintage classes scheduled in Minnesota for 2006. Although there are quite a few riders from Minnesota who do very well at Vintage racing, the state itself has no organized races or series for them, so this ARHCA round is more or less the Minnesota state championship. Except that there are a bunch of good riders from other states there too. The majority of the rounds are in Illinois, with Iowa also holding one.

This was the third year that the track has had a round in the series. Promoters Jack and Cindy Stamschor have stuck with it despite somewhat low attendance the previous years. This year, the turnout was looking very good early on. The track was already quite wet when the storms rolled in a bit before 8AM. It rained big drops spread apart, there was driving rain, there were hard showers, you get the idea, the common theme was much water coming from the sky. When it stopped a few hours later, the track was beyond saturated. Regional director, Mitch Winder, took a vote at the rider’s meeting and even the die-hards had a tough time arguing their case. With a promise to return next year, the race was called.

Since I was there anyway and love looking at old bikes, I couldn’t help but take some photos of them. They weren’t in motion, so it was much easier to get them in focus. The majority of the bikes were in the back of pickups or on open trailers, quite a contrast to the typical RV / enclosed trailer majority seen at most “modern” motocross races.

See how many Bultacos you can spot in this photo

My favorite part of this photo is the extra pipe, which is not quite as cherry as the CZ itself

A couple of Maicos, one of them set on the old school classic stand, the milk crate.

Yet another brand not seen much lately, Ossa.

This mint 77 RM 250 with PDI swingarm and radial head got many admiring looks.
