Story by Ben Horgen, MX Bob Results, Photos and Captions

This year AMA District 23 introduced the Thundersports Performance Quad Series. The format change gives riders competing in Minnesota an opportunity to race on motocross tracks, which develop

differently from the traditional format where both quads and bikes race on the same day. The Straight Arrow Enduro Riders hosted round three of the series at their Grantsburg MX facility. The club displayed a terrific welcome to quad racers over the course of the weekend. The facility was opened and staffed the same as any of their District 23 events, and quad racers showing up Saturday were treated to a unique view of the track, ice rink smooth!

Speculation around Saturday evening campfires was diverse. Many riders expected the track to stay near as smooth as the perfectly prepped track appeared while others were not as hopeful, but remained excited to see how racing lines and corners would develop over the course of a quad only race day. The Straight Arrows had considered hosting a Quad only race in previous seasons, but did not feel enough momentum to pull off an event until the introduction of this year’s D23 sanctioned series. Proving the support was there, 160 riders showed up to race the 19-class event.

The largest class of the day was the traditional 250B class relabeled Quad 265-450B. With 23 entries, the class was split into two divisions, which raced separate first motos and a combined 20-rider main. In the first division, it was Joe Fallen who got the win, but was unable to carry over the momentum in the second moto. Taking second in division one was the #137 of Steven Emerson.

In the second division, an intense race occurred for the podium spots. The #142 pilot, Matt Sutton, pulled the holeshot on his silver Yamaha only to get hung up on one of Grantsburg’s famous deep sand ruts and was forced to dismount and lift his machine back into a racing line. It was Larry Beach on the #204 machine who inherited the lead, but was soon passed by moto winner, Zac Mcclellan. Troubles continued for Sutton as a crash shortly after left him with a seventh place moto one finish. While the racers were all closely bunched it was Beach and #89, Ryan Jeurisson, who swapped spots a few times with Beach getting the last lap pass and second place in Moto one, Division two.

In the second moto, with the top riders combined and a much rougher track, Division Two leaders and Division one second place finisher battled it out for the win. Due to deep ruts, the primary passing zone was the extremely wide whoops section. At times quads were four wide through the technical section, which led to a chicane that exited back into the primarily one-lined race track. Taking the overall for the day, which was based on the second moto, was Steven Emerson with a (2,1) followed by Jeurisson with a (3,2). Third went to Sutton who rebounded from first moto troubles to finish third overall.

In the Vet 30+ class, Craig Cherrington went (1,1) and proved he is still the man to beat. A past 250A State Champion and returning Vet Champion, the 53 year-old, Honda mounted champ, nicknamed ‘Old Man Cherrington’, proved even on the most whooped out tracks, he can out whit and out last his competitors. In the first moto Cherrington passed for the lead early on and never looked back. Behind him the first couple laps included a fierce fight for second place between John Harris and Larry Beach. By the third lap it was a four way battle for second place with Zeb Kittelson and Matt Verdoljak having joined in. When the checkers flew Harris and Beach had been pushed back with Kittelson finishing second and Verdoljak in third.

At the start of the second moto Cherrington finally got his long awaited holeshot and opened up

a large gap. With the track in rough shape and his fans giving him the ‘steady pace’ signals, Cherrington slowed to a pace which allowed Harris to close within view of the #11 rear number plate. Harris who ran away from the remaining Vet riders was able to close the gap Cherrington opened up, but was not able to shove a wheel in before the checkered flag flew.

The next event at the track will be a bike / quad race on the last points-paying weekend of the season, September 24th. The practice the day before will welcome both bikes and quads as well.
