For the second week in a row, Grantsburg Motocross Park was the site of an early round of the District 23 Motocross Championship. Much better weather greeted the 370 entered riders this time, as mild temps and partly sunny skies replaced the cold and rain of the previous round. Most agreed that the track formed differently when the sand is less saturated. Whether one was easier to ride than the other was a common point of debate. Wins were tough to come by this week, as few of the overalls were sweeps and only one rider was able to win two classes. Adam Peper ran away with the Supermini and 85cc 12-15 races for the second weekend a row.

This was the last race at the track before the Premier event, so many of the top A riders were there to find (or confirm) their speed in the sand, and get some valuable track time. These Premier Prequel classes, 125 A and 250 A, featured some of the best racing of the day. Continuing the tradition that they started last year, the promoting Straight Arrow Enduro Riders ran the Premier classes 10 laps.

In the first 125 A moto, Jendro, John Dehn, and Bruce Dehn, all previous winners at this track, quickly pulled away, riding in tight formation. Jendro made a mistake, leaving John to hold off Bruce for the moto win. Jendro was a closing third, followed by Nathan Rosso and Thomas Miller. In the second moto, the top three again pulled away from the field. Jendro worked his way into the lead early, only to have another crash, falling to third. A few laps later, John Dehn went down, and Bruce was there to take the lead to the checkered, and with it, the overall. John (1-3) Jendro (3-2), Miller (5-4), and James Lorr (8-5) rounded out the top five.

Jendro was comfortably out front the entire race in the first 250 A moto, steadily pulling away. John and Bruce followed him home, as the three nearly lapped the field. The second moto looked much like the first, as Jendro, John, and Bruce fell into position. The race was shortened a lap to nine, but that was still one too many laps for Jendro’s bike. With one lap to go and over 30 seconds in front, it locked up on a jump approach. He was unhurt in the incident, but obviously not pleased with all his hard work going up in smoke. The top four of the second moto were the same as the overall; John (2-1), Bruce (3-2), Bill Medek (4-3), and Rick Amatuzio (6-4). Kyle Dehn had some second moto problems, but still hung on for fifth overall (5-9).

One rider who rode steady in the sand was Tyler Allen. In the first 85cc 9-12 moto, Allen lead out of the first turn, with Shane Rhode close behind. Clarion Chapiewski challenged Allen early, but dropped back. Rhode made his way back into second by moto end, closing slightly on Allen, but not challenging. Gapped out behind them were Chapiewski, 85cc 7-11 winner, Riley Kroone, and Riley Paulus, who came out on top in the tight battle over fifth. In the second moto, Chapiewski, Rhode, and Allen broke away from the pack for their own battle. It was Chapiewski taking the moto win, but Allen won the overall (1-2) followed by Rhode (2-3), Chapiewski (6-1), Kroone (3-4), and Paulis (5-5).

Schmidt finishes a classic berm shot
Some of the older riders showed they know a thing or two about going fast in the sand as well. In the first 30+ A moto, Amatuzio lead the first half of the race before falling back to third. Pat McNamara took the point position and held it to the end. Jeremy Schmidt was a relatively close second. Senior riders, Don Bonniksen and David Spizman completed the top 5. In the second race, Schmidt got out front early and stayed there. McNamara was never quite close enough to challenge, but was comfortably in second. Following them in the moto and overall were Bonnicksen, Spizman, and Ray Schlegel.

Next up on the track calendar is the Premier weekend, April 22-23, featuring a KTM Demo Day on the Saturday practice, and the Premier classes, as well as the normal compliment of District 23 motorcycle (only) classes, on Sunday.
