A persistent rain didn’t seem to dampen the enthusiasm of the riders, as the District 23 Motocross series opened at a soggy Grantsburg Motocross Park. With 370 entries and two full motos for all the classes, the track tested a rider’s conditioning as much as their riding ability. Bill Medek looked up to the task, getting off to a fast start by sweeping 250cc A, 25+ A, and 30+ A.

With temps not getting past 50 degrees and a rain that was never real hard, but persisted for all but 45 minutes, it was classic early-spring motocross weather. The deep sand track kept soaking up the moisture, but the pits got a bit sloppy as the day went on. Although the track was not

muddy, that’s not to say it was easy by any means. The rain soaked surface was very heavy and the whoops just kept getting bigger as the races went on.

For the first time in the track’s history, the Straight Arrow Enduro Riders had an open practice. This (much drier) Saturday track time was especially welcome, as many of the riders had not been on an outdoor motocross track since last fall. The track held up well, getting knocked flat before Sunday’s practice, but not staying that way for long.

Medek’s first action was in 25+ A. He worked his way into the lead early and rode away. Charlie Forrest was in second until going down on the last lap, allowing Robert Kohl, Chad Johnson, Sheldon Fratzke all by. In the second moto, Forrest got into the lead and looked to have the second moto victory, but went down hard with a third of a lap to go. Medek was there to take the moto win and the sweep. Kohl (2-4) was next, followed by Forrest (5-2), Johnson (3-5), and Kris Nisula (7-3). Defending class champion, Frank Jackson, showed speed in both motos, but crashes held him back to eight overall.

It was more of the same in the 250cc A class. While other showed good form for a while, it was Medek putting in the consistent laps and winning both motos. Nisula (2-4), Johnson (6-3), Dan Holmes (4-5), and Fratzke (3-7) rounded out the top five. It was another clean sweep for Medek in the 30+ A class. Kohl (4-2) was second again, followed by Ross (Hunter) Thompson (7-3), Eric Garvey (6-4), and Brad Bromenschenkel (5-5).

Thompson pounding to a podium
This was also the first event since District 23 implemented their sound testing policy. In an effort to address the growing problem of noise complaints and legislation, a new rule was adopted, mandating that at least ten riders per race day be selected for a sound test after practice. Class Reps were to also listen for riders putting their loud exhaust systems back on for their race. Promoters were encouraged to have voluntary testing during their practice days, so that riders could get an idea where they stood before an actual race.

Pitching in to help with the testing this weekend were several members of the Norseman MC. They, as the Arrows and all the clubs that promote cross country events in Minnesota, have been conducting sound testing on all bikes at their events since 2004. The voluntary testing on Saturday was quite well utilized and many riders learned how to make simple changes that substantially decrease sound levels. Unfortunately, on Sunday, it never stopped raining long enough to conduct the tests, so the first implementation of the rule was postponed until the following week.

Back to the track, the Senior A class saw the return of multi-time class champion, Jack Parenteau, racing in his first race in four years. Jack holeshot the first moto on his trusty CR 500, but Don Bonnicksen was quickly past and set sail to a convincing win. Behind him, Mike Anderson looked to have second in hand, but Parenteau got by on the last lap. In the second moto, Bonnicksen got out front and rode his KX 450 to another easy win. Anderson withstood Parenteau’s late charge for second overall. Marystown Miniz / HouseBob.com’s Blair Schmidt made virtually no errors in the second moto, on his way to fourth overall.

The only other rider to win more than one class was Alex Peper, sweeping 85cc 12-15 and Supermini. With two more races scheduled in April, this will be a busy month for the track, but as the weather proved at this race, a sandy track is a tough place to rain out.
