Craig Holasek was able to put his name on the traveling trophy one more time by winning the 38th annual Holyoke Enduro. Although the promoting Straight Arrow Enduro Riders encountered a few extra challenges this year, they managed to pull off another event that was enjoyable for the riders.

Less than a month before the race, trail boss and enduro big cheese, Ken Fastner, found out that a key piece of private land could not be used this year. Besides the sad loss of some really fun trails, this left the course with a large gap. With some creative re-routing, coupled with many hours of work, the course was made continuous. The total mileage, while reduced, was still 70 miles.

With the severe storms forecast for the night before never materializing, riders woke up Sunday morning (or earlier depending on how well they can sleep through the passing trains) to pleasant temps. The course was in great shape, perhaps just a bit dry. Early on, word began to circulate that the bar down the road that was to be used for the award presentation had burned down a few hours earlier. This was tough news for everyone, not only because it is a regular stop for those going to and from the trails, but also because the owner had really welcomed motorcyclists.

This is all that remained of the beloved watering hole.

Reviving a tradition, breakfast was provided for the riders, workers, and anyone else who paid a nominal fee. (The sausage and French toast was a culinary delight raved the New York Post) Next up was the sound test. Sound testing has been done at District 23 woods events for the last four years and is now a regular part of the promoter’s and riders’ pre-race routines. Most riders there were very aware of the sound level of their bike and had no problem passing the test. The 158 bikes entered were all tested relatively quickly and the riders began preparing for the 9:00 key time.

The "ARMCA Certified" sound testing crew tests another.
Holasek, whose name already appeared on the traveling trophy more than any other rider, started out fast, dropping only five points through the first six checks. Ryan Moss was only a point behind, with Todd Mathwig, Josh Peterson, and Jeffery Young stacked up a point behind Moss.

After Check Six, they hit the hilly A/B section where Holosek was able to add another point to his lead. Pulling a gap as the course got tougher, he recorded a total score of 15 points, to win the event by a comfortable six points. The race for second came down to the tiebreakers, with District 23 Enduro points leader, Mathwig, talking the position over Young and Moss. A point behind them was Peterson in fifth.

This event was first held in 1969 and has run continuously ever since. The start and finish are near the small town of Holyoke, which is about an hour south of Duluth. The course for this event is primarily in the Nemadji State Forest, but also utilizes private land and Wisconsin county land. Because this is a dual sanctioned event between Districts 16 and 23, many riders from Wisconsin also compete in this event, making the competition level that much higher.

In the B class, it was 250cc rider, Matt Lindeberg, taking the overall with a 33 score. His brother, Robert, was next at 36, winning the 200c class. The next three riders overall, Brian Gray, Todd Treichler, and Joey Martinson, all rode in the 200cc class. Senior class winner, Tim Danelius, was seventh overall, with Vet class victor, Michel Prom right behind in eighth. A lightly attended Open class saw Canadian, Eric Flom, taking the win in fourteenth overall. Jim Finkowski topped the Super Senior class over Richard Kaczmarowski, who had trouble with a few of the early checks and was unable to make up for it.

The trails for the Enduro are divided into five sections. Although they have other club members helping them, the five Section Leaders typically log the most pre-event hours on the trails. The main people to thank for the condition and arrowing of the trails are Ken (he’s everywhere, he’s everywhere) Fastner, John Otto, Roy Fleming, Greg Nelson, and Ron Palm.

The C riders had a slightly shorter course, but still had plenty of challenging trails to contend with. The overall winner was again from the 250cc class. Christopher Giger edged fellow 250 pilot,

Michael Strang, by a single point. Top 200cc rider, John Nienow was next, followed by Senior winner, John Jack, and another 200 class competitor, Jacob Nienow. Top Vet, Michael Birrenbach, was in sixth. First in Open class and eight overall was John Schmalenberg. Choosing to compete against the guys, Jessica Peterson, was tenth overall, third in the 200cc class.

The Junior class ran the regular Enduro on Sunday, but the remainder of the Youth riders competed Saturday. Those classes have their own series, the District 23 Youth Cross Country Series, which has rounds running in conjunction with the regular Enduro and Hare Scrambles events.

The next event for the Straight Arrows is the September 24th Grantsburg Motocross. This year, all the profits from the race are going towards helping Dave Kott. Dave is a club member who suffered a broken neck while riding this spring and was left paralyzed from the chest down. Many other organizations, including the Norseman Motorcycle Club and several businesses in his native Stillwater, are also rallying to help Dave with the challenges his new life will entail. A raffle and many other fun activities are planned for the race, with the goal of raising enough money to make a significant contribution towards his needs.
