On a scorching day of racing, Michael Graif was able to win two tough classes, sweeping 45+ A comfortably, but battling hard with David Spizman for the 40+ A overall. Towards the other end of the age spectrum, Matt “Woody” Wodtke, was as hot as the heat index, taking his Suzuki to four convincing wins in the competitive Schoolboy and 125cc B classes. With nearly 400 riders entered, the track got rough and a bit slippery in spots, rewarding good line choice and steady throttle control.

The hills of Mankato often bring out riders who have many years of success under their belt. Graif, who is old school enough to have once been scary-fast on a Montesa, took the holeshot in both 45+ A motos and ran off to big leads. Graif, and many of the other veteran riders, treated

those who made the trek to the hilly back section of the track, to a fine demonstration of downhill and uphill riding technique. He built most of his 20 and 15 second leads in this largely unwatched section of the track.

Behind him in the first moto, Jonathan Hodapp was second the entire race, comfortably ahead of a battle for third, which saw Michael Voegele edge rival, Lee Arntz. In the second moto, Jim Olson was second out of the first turn and pulled away early. Hodapp and Arntz were spread out in third and fourth. Overall, it was Graif, Hodapp (3-2), Olson (5-2), Arntz (4-4), and Voegele (3-6).

The two 45+ classes were added in 2004 to District 23 motocross. The 45+ A class is for riders who are A riders and 45+ is for everyone else. Attendance was bit spotty early on in the 45+ A class, but the 45+ class has seen steadily growing numbers. Despite the heat of this day, the combined rider total in those classes was comparable to some of the “younger” classes.

David Schmiesing looked to have the holeshot in the first 45+ moto, but went wide, allowing Jeff Coulson to tuck under for the lead. Schmiesing got the lead back on the first lap and pulled a bit of a gap. Coulson reeled him in at the halfway point and was looking for a way around, but Schmiesing held him off for the win. Behind a ways, Ted Simmons fought past Bob Brage for third. Brad Slagel was fairly close behind in fifth. In the second moto, Schmiesing again took an early lead. This time, Coulson caught up sooner and the two battled for the lead. On the last lap, Coulson got around for the moto and overall win. Overall, Schmiesing was next, followed by Simmons (3-4), Slagel (5-3), and Brage (4-5).

Finishing seventh overall in 45+, and leading many rider twenty years his junior, was 68 years-young, Jim Denevan. Riding four motos, including his winning rides in 50+, he looked more consistent in the heat than a certain, much younger and well rested, MXBob.com staff writer.

Wodtke used a time-proven strategy to win his races; get the lead early, then turn it up even more. Nathan Rosso grabbed the holeshot in both Schoolboy motos, but the Wood was around early and jetted away, leading the second moto by over 15 seconds. Rosso was comfortably in second both races, but behind him was quite a scrum. In the first race, Justin Postusta battled up from mid-pack all the way to third. Eric Arhendt came out on top of his race long dice with Cory Vandal for fourth. In the second moto Jeremy Hullet looked to be solidly in third, but crashed out unhurt on the third lap. Vandal and Postusta went at it hard, but Vandal held him off. Postusta (3-4) still finished third overall, followed by Vandal (5-3) and Arhendt (4-7).

Wodtke also won both motos of 125cc B going away, catching several of the A riders who were dropped in front of his moto.

This was the third and last race at this track for 2005 although there will be a Hillclimb at Kato Cycle Club on Saturday, August 27. If you’ve ever thought of trying a Hillclimb, this is one you could make without missing a Sunday motocross points race.

Besides Graif and Wodtke, several other riders rode to double class wins. Dan Grieg won the 85cc 7-11 and 85cc 9-12 classes, Trevor Tuma took the overalls in 125cc A and 250cc A, Matt Foels won 16-24 B and 250cc B, and Frank Jackson fought hard for wins in 25+ A and 30+ A. Delano Sports Center, Leo's South, Cities Edge, Hitching Post, Excel Motor Sports, Scott, MinnesotaCars.com, and Race Tools all provide support for this series. The remaining two rounds of this nine round series will be held at Elko motocross.
