Nearly 200 riders from eight different states converged on the Minnesota River Valley for a beautiful day of hill climbing. The Kato Cycle Club increased the King of the Hill award for this

event to five hundred dollars and Todd Cipala was the grateful rider taking the cash home. The Ellsworth, Wisconsin native not only recorded the best time in the one run, winner-take-all, King of the Hill competition, he also recorded the best times of the day on his way to wins in the 750cc and Open classes.

With over two inches of rain the day before the event, partly cloudy skies, and temperatures in the 70s most of the day, traction was abundant, very different from the oven-like conditions of the previous event. Not surprisingly, the times on the 290-foot climb improved considerably. The hill record of 4.50 would see some serious challenges before the day was over.

In the first round, Mike Wood was the first under five seconds, clocking a 4.928 to lead the 600cc class. That time stood until Cipala rocketed his Open class ride up the hill in 4.65. That time would stand through the first round. Following overall were 600cc riders Wood, Jason Braun, Cipala, and Steve Cain, Senior leader, Dan McMurlyn, and Open riders, Duane Walser, and Justin Odegaard, all coming in under 5.3.

Conditions grew more difficult as the second round started, but a few riders were able to better their first round times and move up in the standings. Cipala had the second best run of the day and the fastest time of the second round, taking his 750cc to the class win with a 4.857. Kurt Koester, Curtis Sullivan, and Odegaard all ran under 5.2 to finish second through fourth in the Open class, third, fifth and sixth overall. Wood improved on his first run to win the 600cc class and post the fourth fastest time. 600 riders, Braun, Cipala, Cain , and Jay Sallstrom rounded out the top ten.

Other riders of note after the regular competition were Jacob Prebe, winning the Mini Senior and 125cc classes, and Wood, who, besides winning the 600cc class, also rode a 250cc to a sixteenth best time and class win.

After two rounds of all the classes, it was on to the King of the Hill competition. The top ten fastest riders of the day qualified to take one shot at the hill. Although there is a championship for this class, and a good finish is important because of that, the big cash prize awaiting the winner of this event didn’t have too many riders thinking about anything but a win. Cipala was one of the first up the hill, not able to better his times from earlier in the day, but setting the KOH mark at 4.899. Despite some great attempts under tough conditions, no one else was able to crack five seconds, and the time stood to the end. Sallstrom came the closest to beating it, running a 5.016. Wood and Cain had the next fastest attempts.

This was the last event for 2005, so the riders will need to wait until 2006 to get their next try at the hill, and its hill record. Many local sponsors help the Kato Cycle Club make these events possible, including Reichel Insulation and Spotless Drywall, Kato Roofing, Pro Home Builders, John Prom Construction, and The Road House Bar and Grill.
