Craig Decker, returned to a track he had not been to for a long time and looked right at home, winning every race he entered. His biggest challenge came in the 250cc A class where Scott Jendro set his usual blistering pace around District 23’s sandiest track. A cool start gave way to a very mild autumn afternoon as the two hundred riders entered were given plenty of laps to pound the track into a whoop-filled test of endurance.

The track was still fairly smooth as the first 25+ A moto left the line. 2005 District 23 25+ A

Frank Jackson rails the Bottomless Sand Berm
and 30+ A champion, Frank Jackson, lead early, but Decker flew by on the second lap and steadily pulled away. Jackson held onto second over Charlie Forrest and Josh Patzoldt. Decker had found his rhythm by the much rougher second moto and was never headed. Jackson was in second early, and although Patzoldt moved by halfway through the race, his second in moto one gave him second overall. Forrest fought through exhaust issues to finish fourth overall.

Decker has had many successful seasons as a professional motocrosser, particularly in supercross and, more recently, the Canadian Nationals. Although he is along-time resident of California, prior to moving there, he lived in Minnesota. This fall marked a return of sorts, as he plans to be based out of Minnesota when he competes in the 2006 Canadian Nationals.

Later in the order, and running eight laps around the newly lengthened track, the 250cc A class was a tough test for the eleven riders entered. In the first moto, Decker, Jendro and Thomas Miller pulled away from the field early. After a lap, Decker lead, followed closely by Jendro, with Miller not quite on their pace. Jendro made his way by on the second lap and was looking strong as the race moved past the halfway point. As the race wore on, Decker was able to increase his pace, catching and re-passing Jendro late in the race to take the win. Miller was a distant third followed by Bill Medek and Patzoldt.

In moto two, the track Decker was riding on didn’t appear to be as rough as it was for most everyone else as he looked smooth out front the whole way. Jendro put on a mid-race charge, closing to within a second by lap six before a mistake the next lap dropped him back. He still easily finished second, in the moto and overall, over Miller, Medek, and Patzoldt, the field spreading out quite a bit as the race wore on.

As is often the case at this old school track, the most entries were in the 40+ classes. In the

Craig Janzig rode consistently both motos
first 40+ race, Scott Steinle grabbed the holeshot, but Bill Engstrom stormed past and looked to have a comfortable lead after the first lap. That didn’t last as Tom Peterson quickly caught and passed him. Peterson continued to lead as Ron Heppner and Craig Janzig closed on Engstrom. Janzig made his way into second as Heppner and Engstrom dropped back. Janzig continued his charge, passing Peterson on the last lap for the win. Bill Cororan was closing in third, followed at a distance by Heppner and Engstrom.

In the second moto, Engstrom was again out front at the start, but this time was still out front halfway through. Janzig and Corcoran were closing in and both made their way past on lap four, with Cororan also passing Janzig. Those two would hold position to the end with Frank Barna and Engstrom trailing. Overall, it was Janzig (1-2) , Corcoran(3-1), Peterson (2-6), and Engstrom (5-4).

This was the last race on the 2005 District 23 outdoor schedule. The promoting Straight Arrow Enduro Riders made a major improvements to the watering system before this race and are already working towards next year’s races. The schedules for Grantsburg, and all the District 23 events, are generally published by late December. It’s never too early to start training for next season.
