The deep sand of Grantsburg Motocross Park was the site of the first round of the 2005 District 23 Premier Series. Two-class defending champion, John Dehn, was on hand, but unable to ride due to an injury suffered the previous week. Instead, it was his younger brother and first year A rider, Bruce Dehn, scoring the overall win in the 125 A class. 250 A class winner, Scott Jendro, was comfortably out front in every moto he entered, but tough luck in his second 125cc and 16-24 motos cost him his shot at the triple class sweep.

The Straight Arrow Enduro Riders made a few changes for the Premier classes. With the thought that the riders in a Premier class should expect the toughest challenge, the 125 A and 250 A classes ran 10 laps. Most 125 B and 250 B riders breathed a sigh of relief that they were not being double dropped with the A riders. The other change was the $50 TheShedShop.org holeshot award for each Premier moto. The track itself had one straightaway rerouted onto some virgin sand. The change also opened up a few more lines on the corners on both sides of it.
 


Thomas Miller leads the first 125 A race. 		Jake Bostrom grabbed the first holeshot cash of the day in the first 125cc A race. His lead was short lived as he crashed in the parking lot section taking Jendro and others with him. The pile-up left his exhaust system looking like a down-pipe and he was unable to finish the moto. Meanwhile, Thomas Miller was leading through lap three, but Jendro and Dehn were closing fast. Jendro took the lead on lap four and slowly increased his lead on Dehn. By the end of ten laps, the two had pulled well clear of Miller, Scott Ehlenfeldt, and Tony Ahlers.

In the second moto, Jendro, Dehn, and Bostrom all got away clean and pulled away from the rest of the pack. Jendro crashed out of the

lead on lap four, taking an agonizingly long time to get the bike started, and ultimately getting a DNF. Dehn was next at the point position, but then he went down two laps later. Bostrom was there to take the lead and run away with the moto win. Even with the crash, Dehn still easily finished second, his 2-2 good enough for the overall win. Ehlenfeldt (4-3) was second followed by Miller (3-4) and Ahlers (5-5).
 

Dehn stayed close to Jendro early 		The first 250cc A moto saw Bostrom and Jendro battling for the early lead, but Dehn in front by the end of the first lap. Jendro got by on lap four and set sail, lapping up to fifth. Bostrom closed in on Dehn in the middle of the moto, but fell and lost touch. Miller was a distant fourth followed by Ehlenfeldt.

Dehn holeshot moto two, but Jendro quickly made his way into the lead, lapping up to fourth place this time. Dehn was in no man’s land between Jendro and Bostrom, the top three all charging hard to the end. The moto finish, and the overall finish was the same: Jendro, Dehn, Bostrom, Ehlenfeldt, and Josh Patzoldt.
 

Jendro’s chance at a double still looked good as he easily won the first 16-24 A race and was way out front in the second. It was not to be as a tangle with a lapped rider left him 5th at the finish. Ehlenfeldt, a rider who normally rides the harder packed south tracks, but dared to take on the sandy challenge, was rewarded with the overall win.

The 16-24 C class may not have the experience that the A boys do, but they provided some good drama. In the first race, Patrick Vogt took the lead early and looked to be checking out, while Colby Edwards, Nathan Huskamp, and Dustin Olson fought over second. Edwards and Huskamp broke free, both closing on Vogt. With less than ¼ track left to go, Vogt made a big mistake. Edwards got by for the win with Huskamp close behind. Vogt recoverd for third, followed by Olson. Vogt grabbed a huge holeshot in the second moto but swapped out spectacularly going over the Tunnel Jump and into the second turn. Zachary Frederickson took the lead and looked solid out front. With the overall already in hand, Edwards closed in, taking the lead on the last lap for the two moto sweep. Frederickson (5-2) was second overall followed by Vogt (3-5), Jacob LeClair (6-3), and Olson (4-6).

There were no triple class winners. The only riders able to win two classes were Frank Jackson in 25+ A and 30+ A and Dalton Carlson in 85cc 9-12 and 85cc 12-15. There is another spring race at the track, then one in October. Plans are already underway to improve the watering system and open up some of the infield areas for better viewing.
