In a tight three-way battle for the overall win, Craig Holasek edged Eric Slominski, and Todd Mathwig to take his second win in a row at the 37 Annual Moose Run Enduro. Although most of the riders were from Minnesota, this was a dual sanction with the good neighbors to the east and the friendly rivalry with the Wisconsin riders helped add some spice, or at least some football related banter, to the pre-event chatter. Riders from at least six different states and providences helped push the rider count to 161. Hot, dry conditions tested the determination and conditioning of the riders and, to a lesser degree, the course workers and pit crews.

The start is in the heart of the Holyoke business district.
The three top AA riders had identical scores through the first five checks, all sitting with a total of 6. Matwig was the first to drop back, taking a 4 on check six while Holasek and Slominski scored a 3. They continued to match scores until check nine, where Holasek was able to card a 6 to Slominski’s 7. All of them zeroed the tenth and final check, giving Holasek a total of 16 and a one-point victory over Slominski, then Mathwig. Fellow AA riders, Ryan Moss and ISDE qualifier, Dylan Debel, overcame some early mistakes to finish fourth and fifth overall.

In the A classes, Kyle Treiber won the 200 A class and was the highest placing A rider. Right behind him was the Senior A winner, District 16’s Duane Eller. Also in the top 20 overall were top Vet A rider, Ralph Feld, and 250 A victor, Dan Larson.

This event was first held in 1969 and has run continuously ever since. The start and finish are near the small town of Holyoke, which is about an hour south of Duluth. The trails for this event are primarily in the Nemadji State Forest, but the course also utilizes some private land and Wisconsin county land. This year, because of the dry conditions, the promoting Straight Arrow Enduro Riders were able to use the all the available trails, leading to a 80.4 mile total, the longest for this event in quite some time.

The overall B results saw quite a diversity of riders at the top. Coming out on top with a score of 41 was the 200 A winner, Alex Martinson. Next was a pair of District 16 riders. Augustus

Hoffman took the 250 B overall while Senior B rider, Jack Drummond was next. Rounding out the top four was the Vet B winner, Michel Prom. A few spots back, Lance Hereau, also from District 16, was the top finisher in Open B.

The trails for the Enduro are divided into five sections. Although they have other club members helping them, the five Section Leaders typically log the most pre-event hours on the trails. The main people to thank for making the enjoyable event it is are Ken Fastner, John Otto, Roy Fleming, Greg Nelson, Matt Leebens, and Ron Palm.

The C riders had a slightly shorter course, but still had plenty of challenging trails to contend with. The top four overall positions were filled with riders in the 200 C class, with Nicolas Hillman on top. Next was Jeddiah Adler in 250 C, then John Ehlen edging Robert Martin in Senior C. Next came Mark Haldeman taking a close Vet C victory over Paul Parker. Noel McElfresh was the first Open C rider, twelfth overall.

The School Age class ran the regular Enduro on Sunday, but the remainder of the Youth riders competed in a Hare Scrambles style race on Saturday. Those classes have their own series, the District 23 Youth Cross Country Series, which has rounds running in conjunction with the regular Enduro and Hare Scrambles events.
