Elko was the sight of a late round of the District 23 Premier Championship and Trevor Tuma and Jacob Bostrom made the most of their first trips of the year to the track. Tuma won both motos of 250cc A while Bostrom swept 125cc A. With sunny skies and mild temperatures all day and over 400 entries providing tight racing action throughout the order, it was a beautiful day to be at a motocross race.

Going into the event, Bostrom had a comfortable points lead in both Premier classes and was looking for more wins to help put the chanpionships away. Since this was a Premier event,

the 125cc A and 250cc A races were twenty minutes plus one lap. Bostrom got the holeshot in the first moto of 125cc A, followed by brothers, Matt and Tony Ahlers. Tuma worked into second by the fifth lap of what would be a 15-lap race. By that time, Bostrom had a comfortable gap that he held to the end. The two separated themselves from the rest of the pack by the end of the race. Next across the line were Tony Ahlers, Jesse Gaskey and Jesse Peterson.

The second moto looked to be a near repeat of the first, but this time, Tuma got to second sooner. Gradually he chipped away at the 10-second gap until he closed to Bostrom’s rear fender with two laps to go. Tuma pulled even a few times, but

Bostrom was able to hold him off to the end, as the two far outdistanced the rest of the field. Overall, it was Bostrom, Tuma, Tony Ahlers (3-3), Gaskey (4-5), and Matt Ahlers (6-4).

Since there are two to three events running each weekend during the District 23 Points season, the Premier class system was added a few years ago in an attempt to draw all the top riders together at as many different tracks as possible. Nine of the twelve tracks have one race that is designated a Premier race. On those days, they are the only track paying points to 125cc A and 250cc A. Besides this race’s Premier class winners, many of the other riders in those classes made their only appearance at the track this year.

There were a few new faces in the 250cc class, but most of the ones up front were familiar.

In the first moto, Tuma lead all the way, while most of his competitors had a problem at some point in the race. Bostrom came through for second, followed by the 250cc brother act, Jason and Jeff Doyle. In the second race, Tuma again got out front early and checked out. Bostrom was towards the bottom of the top ten at the start and then dropped back further with a spill on the second lap. With nine laps in the books, Jeff Doyle looked to be comfortably in second, but then Jason closed in and made his way past. On the next lap, Bostrom moved by, his charge through the pack netting him a third. Tuma’s sweep scored the overall win followed by Jason Doyle (3-2), Bostrom (2-3), Jeff Doyle (4-4), and Trevor Schuster (5-5).

With the deep fields in nearly all the classes, double class wins were hard to come. The two riders able to pull it off were Gannon Audette in 85cc 7-11 and 85cc 9-12 and Chris Aloisio in 25+ C and 30+ C.

As well as being a round of the Premier Championship, this race was also a round of the Motokazie Elko-Mankato Dealer Series for all of the motorcycle classes. Delano Sports Center, Leo's South, Cities Edge, Hitching Post, Excel Motor Sports, Scott, MinnesotaCars.com, and Race Tools all provide support for this series. There is just one more round left and most of the championships are still up for grabs.
