The 2005 Minnesota Supermoto racing season kicked off with both the temperature and the racing running hot. With not much history to draw from, there were no clear pre-race favorites, but Erick (not Ben’s brother) Bostrom proved to be the class of the field, running out front in the premier Open Pro class.

There have only been a few one-off Supermoto events held in Minnesota, but 2005 is the year that will change. Delano Sports Center, Donahue Racing LLC, and Stockholm Karting Center have come together to form the state’s first dedicated Supermoto race circuit. The track consists of a thirty feet wide, .7 mile long, fourteen turn, road course and an approximately .4 mile long dirt section. The riders end up spending close to an equal amount of time on dirt and asphalt. The facility includes an indoor garage area and showers.

The premier class is the Open Pro. The only limitations in that class are that the rider must be 16 or older and that the bike is a single cylinder. Bostrom, who rides both motocross and flat track, lead every lap of the heat and the main. After a sixth in the heat, Tony Donahue came back for a second in the main, making it a KTM 1-2. Rounding out the podium was Husaberg mounted, Troy Roelofs.

The next race was the combined 250 and 450 classes. In both classes, the displacements limits are similar to the ones in the 125 and 250 classes in AMA motocross, the wheels must be 17 inch, but all other mods are fair game. Gary (not the former Met’s catcher) Carter screamed his YZ250F to wins in his heat and the main. CR250 mounted motocrosser, Jeff Sandback, finished second in the main followed by the CR450F of Dan Ingalls.
Not forgetting the smaller riders, there are the Lightweight and Mini Motard classes. The displacement rules are similar to the 85cc and 65cc AMA rules. Within a few limits, all other modifications are allowed. KLX125 mounted, Brett Donahue, was last in the heat, but came back in the main for the win. Heat winner, Jake Struzyk rode his TTR125 to second followed by the BBR200 of Tyler Ingalls.

A wide variety of machines awaits the start of the Sportsman class.
The Sportsman class is meant to be the entry level class. Starting with a single cylinder motorcycle, the calipers, travel and wheel size must be left stock. Any tires can be used and brake rotors, pads, and lines may be upgraded. Both the heat and the main featured a great battle between Randy Riley, on his versatile KDX, and his son, Dan. On this day, youth prevailed, as Dan took his Honda to both wins. KX mounted, Derrick Harff improved on his heat race result with a third in the main.
There are three more races scheduled for the facility in 2005; July 31, August 28, and September 18. (Check their Track Page for more information.) With the sport in this state being in its infancy, it’s hoped that a facility of this caliber located so close to the Twin Cities metro area will help put Minnesota on the Supermoto map.
