Over 800 people made their way to the spacious Oakdale Prom center to help honor the achievements of 2005’s District 23 motocross champions. With nearly $50,000 in prizes being given away, there was plenty of excitement going into the evening. Recognition for some fine performances, as well as a few surprises along the way, highlighted the presentation of the year-end awards.

Earlier in the day, the District conducted their annual meeting and the year-end awards were given to the B and C classes. Then an auction was held for some pieces of riding gear and other memorabilia. The highest bid ended up being for a Mike Larrocco jearsy, going for over $300. All together, over $1100 was raised for the Aplastic Anemia research foundation.

After a tasty dinner, it was almost time for the championship classes to be recognized. But before the award presentation started in earnest, there was the night’s first twist. To understand the first surprise, a bit of background is needed. Last year, the district, with help from Mike Larson at Larson’s Cycle, offered a 250F to anyone who could win both Premier classes. It had not been done for quite a while, but John Dehn pulled it off and walked away with a bike at last year’s banquet. This year, the banquet awards fund was not quite as large and the bike was not offered as an award for doing the double. Or so it seemed.

This year, Jacob Bostrom had a great season, riding up front race in and race out, and won both Premier classes. Despite it being done two years in a row, the difficulty of the accomplishment seemed to District Chairman, Mike Quinn, to deserve more than the $500 awards for each class. It didn’t sit well with Mike Larson either, and together, they decided to do something about it. After telling the crowd of Bostrom’s results this year Quinn, called him up to the podium. He then asked him if it was all right if instead of the $1000, he picked up a 06 YZ450 from Larson’s instead. His look of surprise and happiness was all the answer anyone needed, as he thanked District 23 and long time supporter, Larson’s Cycle, for their generosity.

Not all the winners of bikes had to work as hard for them. Drawings were held for three bikes. Jake Wessling won a YZ85 from Larson’s, Patrick Peterson took home a YZ450, also from

Larson’s, and Todd McIlroy won a KX250F from Caswell Cycle.

The awards started with the Youth riders and worked their way up to the Fossils (50+). Each champion has accomplished something difficult, which makes multiple championships that much more significant. This year, the only Mini rider to win two classes was Gannon Audette in 85cc 7-11 and 85cc 9-12. This continues an impressive streak for him. Since riding his 50 to his first District 23 championship class in 2000, he has won one at least one championship every year since. This year’s titles were his seventh and eighth.

Partway through the year-end awards presentations, the announcement was made concerning this years’ Donny Schmidt Sportsmanship Award. District 23 introduced a new annual award in 2001. This award is based on sportsmanship, not winning races. The recipient will be a past or present racer that has exhibited the positive qualities of sportsmanship and giving, that were exemplified by Donny through out his twenty-year racing career. These qualities include a passion for riding off road motorcycles, the ability to have fun while riding, and dedication to never let up until the checkered flag regardless of position in the race. The recipient will be willing to help fellow competitors and racers in any way, and set an example that other racers can aspire to follow.

Very few people know the choice for this award prior to its announcement. One person, in particular, thought he knew, but didn’t. As the outgoing award winner, Scott Cripps, was explaining the award and how the recipient is chosen, he stunned the recipient by announcing that this year’s winner was Mike Quinn. Not usually one who is short on words, an emotional Quinn was quite brief as he thanked everyone and reiterated his deep respect and admiration for the late two-time world champion.

As the awards moved onto the big bikes, only one rider was able to win three classes. Nick Claire won Schoolboy, 125cc B, and 250cc B. Joining Bostrom as two-time winners were past champions, Frank Jackson, in 25+ A and 30+ A and Mike Graif in 40+ A and 45+ A. Graif’s earliest championships pre-date computer records by at least a decade, but he most likely has the longest span between District 23 Motocross championships. If you are waiting for him to slow down, it could be a while.

As people were filing out with their loot, it seemed like most everyone was walking out with something pretty nice. Scott Cripps was instrumental in getting a lot of sponsors to ante up. Multi-time Women’s class champion, Tiffany Rumpka, was in charge of organizing the banquet this year and received high marks by all for the quality of the facility and of the event itself. As with any of the events, many other District volunteers worked hard behind the scenes to make the banquet the success that it was. With the year ending on a high note, racers were already looking past the long winter ahead and towards the 2006 season.
