Mankato MX, June 6, 2004

Kato Cycle Club was again the site for a round of the Motokazie Dealer Series. While the excellent weather brought quite a few new faces out to the race, it was many of the same faces at the top of the podium. Matt Wodtke was once again unstoppable, winning all six motos he entered in 125 B, 250 B, and Schoolboy, and passing more than a few A class riders on the A/B double drops. Wodtke was the only rider to win three classes. Two other riders duplicated their results from the previous round. Brett Ohland doubled up in the 125 A and 250 A classes while Jesse Kangas was way out front in Supermini and 85cc 12-15.

An eerily foggy start gave way to a mostly sunny afternoon. There were a few damp spots in the track early on, but other than that, there was no real evidence of the nearly month long deluge that Minnesota had been experiencing. After two weeks of mud racing, a dry track and pit area was a welcome site for the 350 riders who signed up and for everyone in attendance with the possible exception of waterfowl.

Wodtke got out front early in the first 250cc B moto and was never headed. Brandon Korin was entertaining the crowd with some whips as he held down second in front of Trent Sims. Aaron Deer worked his way up from a bad start for fourth. The second moto was another Wodtke runaway. Korin was again second. A good dice developed between Sims and Deer for third, until Deer went down on lap three. Sims eventually dropped to 5th, still good enough for third overall Zachary Soucek (6-4) and Tim Schulz (8-3) rounded out the top five.

His competitors' view - Matt Wodtke churns up the Mankato soil on his way to one of six wins.

There are two distinct parts of the track. The back section, which begins shortly after the start, consists primarily of riding up and down very steep hills with a few fast sweepers and straight-aways mixed in. Once you get to the summit of the track, you then jump down into the front part. This is the part of the track with most of the spectators and has a more modern layout, including a rhythm section and a few tabletops. Not surprisingly, the more mature riders love the back section, but perhaps showing that some things always stay the same, most of the younger riders like it too.

One set of riders that had a lot of experience going fast up and down hills is the 30+ A class. Out front in the first moto, just as it was at in both motos here three weeks earlier, was the Honda with the big 1v on it. But wait, the defending D23 Vet champ, Darwin Frideres, was watching from the sidelines with a very recently broken collarbone. Flogging the immaculately prepared thumper was friend and fellow Iowan, Mike Carlson, who looked very comfortable on his “test ride”, controlling both motos for the overall win. Tony Ulrich was second both times out followed by Michael Lenarz (4-3), Chris Zurek (3-4), and Randy Saeger (5-7).

James Carsten comfortably out front in 16-24 C
Some of the bigger turn-outs of the day were in the C classes. James Carsten had an excellent day in 16-24 C, winning both motos by a comfortable margin. Behind him, good battles ensued. In the first moto, Craig Danberry was in second until crashing on the second lap. Scott King and Mike Herman moved into second and third and were followed at the finish by Mitchell Foels, Brian Paulson, and Mike Hiniker. In the second moto, Paulsen, King, and Hiniker battled for second for the first few laps. Herman overcame a bad start to catch up to third place and second overall. Hiniker finished second in the moto for third overall.
