Mankato MX, May 16, 2004

The Kato Cycle Club was the site of the second round of the Motokazie Dealer Series. It was the first race of the year at the track and Matt Wodtke proved to be up to the challenge of the hilly circuit, winning three very competitive classes, 125cc B, 250cc B, and Schoolboy.

The facility is located in the scenic Minnesota River valley, approximately one hour southwest of the Twin Cities. The track is on the same property that has hosted many national level hill climb events. There is an abundance of steep hills that are utilized on the track. If you have forgotten how much fun riding a dirt bikes up and down hills can be, this track will remind you all day long.

There are two distinct parts of the track. The back section, which begins shortly after the start, consists primarily of riding up and down very steep hills with a few fast sweeper/straight-aways mixed in, quite old school. After that, you jump down into the front part of the track. This is the part of the track with most of the spectators and has a more modern layout including a rhythm section and a few table tops.

This shot is of the front part of the track, taken from a point part way up one of the smaller hills.

Wodtke won all six motos that he raced in and was the only rider to win three classes. One rider who won two classes was Jesse Kangas, who dominated Supermini and 85cc 12-15. Kangas moved into the lead early in the first moto of Supermini and took off. Andrew Rultledge held second most of the race with Isaac Schreurs winning his battle with Charles Perkins for third. Kangas grabbed the holeshot of the second moto and gapped the field, pulling nearly thirty seconds by the end of the four lap race. Schreurs and Perkins were second and third in the race and overall.

This is the second year that Motokazie has run the races at this track and they continue to make improvements. New for this year is a separate micro track. The normal track is so hilly, that the 50s were limited to a rather small portion of it. Now, they have their own track with proportionally sized obstacles. Running on their own track also helped the big track program move along quicker.

Once the little guys and gals advance to 65s, then they get to ride the regular track. With the tacky conditions, the 65s ran all the hills, just like the big bikes. Dustin Wolff won both motos of the 10-11 division. Zach Osowski pressured him for a while in the second moto on his way to third overall (5-2). Austin Falkman (3-3) rode two steady races for second overall. In the 7-9 class, Kyle Ohnsorg and Dylan Wolff finished first and second in both motos, passing several of the 10-11 class riders along the way. Regardless of where they finished, it seemed like most of the riders pulled off smiling.

The Vet C class rips through the first turn.

The first round of the series was held at the Elko track. ScottUSA, Hitching Post, Cities Edge, Leo’s South, Motoprimo, and Cannon Falls HYS all provide support for this series. Three hundred riders signed up for this race. Other double winners on the day were Brett Ohland, riding a pair of Yamaha to wins in 125cc A and 250cc A, Alvis Novotny, winning 30+ B and 40+ B, and Jamie Elder who won the 85cc 7-11 and 85cc 9-12 classes.
