Little Falls MX, August 1, 2004

Little Falls may be the birthplace of Charles Lindbergh, but all the airborne vehicles today were motorcycles and quads. Flying in front of the ultra-competitive Schoolboy class was Bud Gassert, who like many of the overall winners, won the crucial second moto. With over 550 entrants, all the classes had full gates and exciting racing. There was also something unusual for this 2004 District 23 season, a dry race day with temperatures close to 90.

The first Schoolboy moto was all Justin Rudolph. Gassert was in second all the way with Neil Ehrenberg battling to third in front of Eric Quast and Randy DiBartolo. Gassert lead the second moto from start to finish. Behind him was a great battle for second that was eventually won by Ehrenberg for second overall. He was followed by Quast (4-3), Rudolph (1-6), and Matt Wodtke (6-5).

Matt Gamble heads into a rhythm section while leading the first 16-24 B moto.

The track is located at the Morrison County fair grounds, about 100 miles northwest of the Twin Cities. The front part of the track is built close to the grandstands with the rest of the track in a large open field behind it. Most of the track is visible from the main spectator area, where they have an announcer calling the action all day. The dirt is fairly hard with low consequence doubles on most of the track except for a straightaway and a half of “little Southwick” sand.

Consistency paid off in the always exciting, 16-24 B class. The first moto saw Matt Gamble lead the first half of the race before being passed by Ryan Toulouse, who held the lead until the end. Neil Dack worked up to second over Gamble, Nicholas Mills, and Caleb Osvold. Toulouse went down at the start of moto two and could only make it up to 14th. Dack made his way past early leader, Oswald, and lead the rest of the way for the overall win. Osvold held on for second overall (5-3), followed by Mills (4-4), Gamble (3-5), and Travis Ahrens (8-2).

In front of an oddly digital sky, Travis Ahrens styles through a rhythm section on his way to second in the second 16-24 B moto.

A bit older and more experienced were the riders in the 25+ A class. In the first moto, 30+ A winner, Bill Medek, jumped into the lead and edged away from the pack. Behind him, Danny Edmonson and Mark Johnson fought for second all moto with Edmonson ahead at the end. In the second moto, Medek appeared to have the holeshot, but went a bit wide, allowing Reggie Malikowski to lead out of turn one. His lead was short lived as he went down on the first lap, clearing the way for a fight for the overall win between Edmonson, who was now leading, and Medek. Edmonson pulled away slightly each lap, until pulling a gap on the last lap, when Medek appeared to back off the pace. The two had cleared away from the third place, Johnson. Also dropped with the class was 45+ A, where Terry Westlin dominated both motos, running unchallenged all day.

The only riders to win two classes was Brett Ohland in 250 A and 16-24A and Joshua Troumbly in Quad 250 B and Quad Open B. Helping to make these races possible are Bee Line Sport Center Yamaha of St. Joseph, Larson Motorsports of Little Falls, and Hilmerson RV.
