Grantsburg MX, May 2, 2004

Grantsburg Motocross Track was the site of the first District 23 Premier race of the year and John Dehn came away with victories in both Premier classes. The wins were hard earned, as many of the best riders in Minnesota and west Wisconsin were there to blitz the sand and grab maximum points. In the first ever Quad Premier race, Lee Harper also pulled off the double win, sweeping the Quad 250 A and Quad Open A classes.

Since there are two to three events running each weekend during the District 23 Points season, the Premier class system was added a few years ago in an attempt to draw all the top riders together at as many different tracks as possible. Ten of the twelve tracks have one race that is designated a Premier race. On those days, they are the only track paying points to 125cc A and 250cc A bike classes and the 250 A and Open A quad classes. This year the district has boosted the year end awards for the bike classes. The top3 get cash with the winner of each class getting $1000. If the same rider wins both classes, they win a 250F.

The added stakes seemed to have it’s desired effect. Many A class riders made their only Grantsburg appearance of the year at this race. The track is the sandiest of the series and the bike swallowing whoops that start to appear late in the first set of motos really tested the rider’s stamina and concentration.

The first premier race was 125cc A. Jake Bostrom grabbed the first moto holeshot over Matt Omann, Nate Broughton, and Lee Erickson. Dehn tangled with another rider in the first turn and went down. Bostrom lead all the way, but there was quite a battle behind him. Broughton, who qualified for several mains in this year’s national Arenacross series, worked his way into second, but fell on the second lap. Dehn finished his run through the pack by passing Jason Johnson for second on the last lap. Erickson and Omann rounded out the top 5.

Jacob Bostrom leads John Dehn (257), Nate Broughton (381) and Jason Johnson (67) into the second turn in the second 125cc A moto

Dehn put his Heinen’s / GPS Racing / Precision Line Motorsports / Ten Racing YZ 250F into the lead on the first lap of the second moto and disappeared, pulling away by several seconds a lap. Broughton was initially second ahead of Johnson, but both ran into problems on the second lap. Dehn’s 2-1 score gave him the overall win, followed by Bostrom (1-2), Erickson (4-3), James Easler (8-4), and Johnson (3-10).

The first 250 A moto saw many of the same players up front. Dehn lead out of the first turn followed by Broughton, Ryan Greening, and Easler. Broughton, struggling in the admittedly unfamiliar surface and dropped back a bit, as Dehn pulled away and Greening and Easler moved into second and third. They were followed at the finish by Jade Dungey and Rick Amatuzio.

In moto two, Dehn and Broughton ran first and second early. Dehn , who qualified for the 2003 Millville national, was a putting on a clinic out front, putting nearly 10 seconds a lap on the field until turning it down a notch at the end. Greening was second overall (2-4) followed by Easler (3-5), and vet riders, Bill Medek (6-3) and Amatuzio (5-6).

Frank Foote (491) leads the second combined 40+ C/ 45+B/C / Women’s race followed by Lana Merkley (33) Taylor Kraft (12), and John Dahlen (790).

But it wasn’t just young men racing on this day. One of the more interesting combinations of classes is the 40+A/B classes double dropped with Senior C and Women. Former state 40+ A champion, Dan Zelazny, won both races quite comfortably, but races within the race brewed behind him. Grantsburg regular, Taylor Craft, won both motos in the Women’s class while Dan Pohl finished in front of a few A riders on his way to the 40+ B class win. The final two spots on the 40+ A podium went to KTM 200 mounted, Ray Osowski, and frequent first moto crasher, Brian Fisher.
