Elko Motocross, September 19, 2004

The last round of the Motokazie Elko-Mankato Dealer Series saw some of the championships already clinched, but many of them did not get decided until this round. Aaron Deer ended up winning titles in two classes, but both to went to the final moto, and he responded to the pressure well.

Deer came into the day leading the 16-24 B class by six points over Justin Rumpca. After Rumpca won the first moto and Deer finished fifth, it looked like his points lead may not hold. Deer responded with a holeshot and convincing win. Rumpca ran into problems in the second moto which dropped him to fourth in the series. Deer’s second overall behind John Emmeck easily clinched the title. Brandon Korin’s sixth overall moved him into second place, followed by Matthew Boe, who ran a strong fourth overall on the day.

The championship was wide open in the 250cc B class. Matt Wodtke, the points leader going into the day, was absent, leaving the door open for second place, Deer, and Boe, who was two points behind him. Deer finished second in the first moto, but Boe was right behind him, setting up a second moto race for the championship. Deer got another holeshot and checked out, getting the overall and series win. Eric Hughes held second for the whole race to card a second overall. Boe’s third overall moved him into second by a single point.

Another class that went down to the last moto was 16-24C. Jacob Coulson had a 21 point lead over Jame Carsten coming in, but with the throw-away figured in, the lead was only five points. In the first moto, Carsten did what he had to do and won the moto. Coulson did what he needed to do and finished right behind him. The second moto saw Coulson in the lead with Carsten close behind. Carsten needed to pass Coulson and hoped a few others did as well. Instead, Coulson pulled away slightly towards the end giving him the overall and the championship.

Several other championships were decided this day, but with less drama. Super-Mini champion, Jesse Kangas, elected not to ride the other class he was leading, 85cc 12-15, allowing Shawn Kline to take that title with a second overall finish. Jed O Connor lead the 25+ A class at the start of the day by eight points over Aaron Carlson. O Connor finished a strong second behind Carlson on the day, giving him the most gross points, but he had one throw-away. Carlson had no throw-aways so when the points were tallied, the championship was his.

Three riders were able to win two class crowns. Jeff Sandback came into the day leading both 30 Plus B and 40 Plus B, but by fairly slim margins. While he was not able to win either class this day, he was consistently in front of his class rivals and held the lead in both classes. Nick Oja had clinched titles in 125cc C and Schoolboy in the previous round as had Joe Mueller in the 125cc A and 16-24 A classes.

Hitching Post, Cities Edge, Leo’s South, Motoprimo, and Cannon Falls HYS, and Scott all provide support for this series. All that’s left for the series now is to enjoy the October banquet and get a jump on 2005 bench racing. Information about the banquet can be found at www.motokazie.com.
