Brookston MX, June 13, 2004

Echo Valley Motocross Park held it’s first race of the year and it was Rick Amatuzio, using his home court advantage to the fullest, riding his Amzoil Honda to three out of four moto wins in the ultra-competitive +25 A and +30 A classes. With nearly 500 entrants, there was plenty of good racing for the fans to watch all day long.

As the name implies, the track is laid out in a grassy valley and uses the elevation changes to the fullest. Most of the jumps are downhill fly-aways or uphill jumps. The dirt is loose, almost sandy in parts, with bowl turns on several of the tighter corners. Nearly the entire track is visible from the main spectator viewing area, which has a grandstand and is located very close to the concessions. An announcer calls the action all day. The track is located about 40 miles west of Duluth, Minnesota. For anyone who lives north of Brookston, this is the closest District 23 race. For many of the spectators and riders, this may be the only district race they will attend, leading many of the district regulars to look at the result sheets and wonder, “Who are these guys?”

In the first +30A moto, Amatuzio moved into the lead early and gapped the field. Behind him, defending +40 A champion and current Donny Schmit Award recipient, Mike Nathe, held second for the first half of the race, but then dropped back. Mike Masters and David Matten worked their way into second and third followed by Tim Bernloehr and Craig Janzig. After winning the first 25+ A moto, Amatuzio went back to work in the second +30 A moto two, again taking an immediate lead and motoring away. Nathe and Mark Johnson battled for second most of the race, with Nathe
holding the spot to the checkered. Masters held off Bernloehr for fourth, giving him second overall. He was followed in the overall standings by Nathe (7-2), Bernloehr (4-5), and Matten (3-6). Amatuzio couldn’t quite pull off the vet class sweep, going down in the second +25 A moto and only able to make it to eighth.

One of the bigger classes of the day is +30 C. These riders typically have quite a bit less experience than their same age, A class brethren, or are very skilled at not getting advanced. This class often includes a lot of moto dads who, after watching Junior on the track for many years, decide to get out on the track themselves. In the first moto, Ian Hughes lead most of way, but was feeling constant pressure from John Jurcik. On the last lap, Jurick found a way around and held on for the win. They were followed by Anthony Radloff and Lance Wilson. In the second moto, Hughes made his way past the first lap carnage and into a lead he would never relinquish. A ways back, Wilson won his battle with Warren Hanninen for second in the moto and overall. First moto winner, Jurcik, had a crash filled second moto and was only able to make it to ninth place. Surprising a few of his +30 peers that they “got beat by an old guy”, Hughes was also seen out on the track winning the +40 C class.

But not all of the riders entered were crow’s feet enhanced. One of the many youth riders putting in good rides was Cody Thomsen, who won the 85cc 9-12 class and took second in 85cc 12-15 and Super-Mini. In the first 9-12 moto, Brandon Murphy grabbed the holeshot, but it was Thomsen who moved into the lead before the first lap was over and pulled away. Murphy was a comfortable second followed at the line by Storm Johnson and Brandon Bartelds. The second moto was much more interesting. 85cc 7-11 winner, Cole Seaton, got the holeshot with Thomsen right behind him. They pulled away for their own private battle for the lead. Thomsen pulled even on several occasions, but could not make a pass stick. Seaton won the moto, but his first moto thirteenth left him out of contention for the overall. Thomsen took the overall win followed in the moto and overall by Murphy, Johnson, Bartelds, and Jeremy Nathe.

Other double winners on the day were Tony Demarias in the 85 12-15 and Super-Mini, Kelly Brown in 125 B and 250 B, Matthew Trefz in 250 C and 25+ C, and Dustin Buesgens in Quad 250 B and Quad Open B.
